Chapter 14: Below

"Chamomile," Aphrodite said. "You've been up all night."

She stood in the doorway in a fresh white suit, not one hair out of place.

The two new doves filled the office behind her.

I still had my contract open in one hand and my phone in the other.

She looked at the phone and laughed.

"Oh, darling. Pictures."

"Of everything."

"Take as many as you like." She held out the cup. "Drink up. You'll sleep beautifully."

I knew that cup.

Jody had woken up at the Isles for one minute, and someone had handed her a cup of tea.

"I'm not thirsty."

"You will be. There's no water in here, and Halloween is nineteen days away." She set the cup on the nearest shelf, beside the folder of the woman who'd trained me. "I'll leave it right here. Everybody drinks eventually."

She turned to go.

The vault door was still open behind her, heavy and white.

A door.

Any door.

I took two steps and knocked on the inside of it, three times, hard enough to hurt my knuckles.

Aphrodite turned around.

"Hades," I said. "Come in."

I said it to the room. To the shelves. To my own name on the spine of a folder.

"Please come in."

Aphrodite smiled at me with real pity.

"Sweetheart. It's my house. You can't invite anyone into my..."

The lights went blue.

The cold came up through the floor.

Frost ran across the white shelves and over the gold seals.

The tea in the cup froze solid with a crack.

The vault door swung wide on its own, and on the other side of it was not her office anymore.

It was his black stone hall, the blue lamps, the dog with all three heads down and growling.

Hades walked through.

He stopped beside me.

He looked at Aphrodite, and for the first time since the ballroom, she took a step back.
