Chapter 20: Cold Rink
The only ice in Duluth that nobody could cancel was the pond behind the Lakewalk.
It was frozen eight inches thick by Sunday morning, and the city had cleared a rectangle with a snowblower and put out two orange cones for goals.
The whole team showed up at six.
Twenty-two boys in mismatched gear stood on the bank with their breath going up.
Coach walked down the line with a clipboard and a thermos the size of a fire extinguisher.
"The club took our ice," he said. "The lake took theirs back."
Somebody laughed.
"Warm up," Coach said. "And don't fall through. I don't want to explain that to a school board."
Rhett skated onto the pond first, with his stick over his shoulder, and the others followed him.
I stood on the bank beside Dottie in my biggest coat, holding a folding table I had borrowed from the church.
"What are we doing again?" Dottie asked.
