Chapter 7: Mine

The sound of the big doors closing behind Kenzie seemed to echo for a full minute.

Around us, the team was drifting in for practice, one boy at a time, dropping bags on the benches.

They slowed down when they saw Kenzie's face.

"Ducks," I said. "That's a lot to build on."

"It's a wall, Anja. It's yellow. It's yours."

"Lots of people had that wallpaper."

"In 1994, maybe." She held out her hand, palm up. "Show me your phone."

"No."

"If you didn't send it, you won't mind."

"I'm not handing my phone to a person who's accusing me of something in front of the hockey team."

"Then I'm the problem?"

"You said it, not me."

Somebody whistled low.

Brock hung back with his hands in his pockets, and he looked like a boy who had walked into the wrong party.

"Kenz," he said. "Babe. Maybe don't."

"You said you saw her wall."

"I said I saw a wall."

"Brock!"

"I saw it for two seconds on Rhett's phone!" he said. "I don't know whose wall it was!"

Kenzie rounded on him. "Then why did you tell me it was yellow?"

"Because it was yellow!"

"So you saw the picture."

"I never said I didn't."

"You told the entire lunchroom you got it!"

I should have been enjoying that.

I wasn't.

The team had gone silent, and I could feel twenty pairs of eyes crawling over me.

I could feel my own pulse in my fingers.

Kenzie turned back with her phone already out.

"I'm going to call the number," she said. "It was an app number, so it'll ring for whoever has the app open.
