Chapter 26: The Blade
The Duke came half out of his chair.
Two guards at the foot of the dais started forward.
"Stand still," said the King.
They stood still.
So did the Duke, with one hand on his empty sheath.
"She's drawn a blade at the King's table," he said. "Majesty, she's out of her mind."
"She's holding it by the wrong end," said the King. "Let's see what she does with it."
I turned the dagger over in my hand.
Rubies on the hilt, a sloe branch in silver on the guard.
The blade was good steel, polished so bright I could see the garlands in it.
"Thank you, Your Grace," I said. "It's very clean. That's what I need."
I went back down the steps to the little table.
"Steward. Bring me the pot you poured the twelfth cup from."
The steward looked at the Duke.
"Bring it," said Bertrand from the high table.
The steward brought it out from behind the screen, half full and still warm.
I poured every drop of it into the white porcelain slop bowl in the middle of the table.
"The old blender who taught me in the back room had one trick for painted leaf," I said. "He showed it to me the year I was nine."
