Chapter 29: The Queue
On Saturday I came down to the shop at five, and the queue was already there.
Not a long one. Four people.
A fishwife with her basket. A carter. The schoolmaster from the kitchen yard, without his boys.
And at the very front, sitting on my step with his back to my door, the Crown Prince.
He was in the coachman's coat with the hole in the elbow.
He had a paper twist of hot chestnuts and a look of enormous patience.
"You said six," I said.
"I wanted a good place."
"You're blocking my door."
"I'm first in the queue." He held up a chestnut. "Want one?"
I stepped over him and unlocked the shop.
By six the queue went down Quay Lane to the corner.
By half past it went round the corner and down to the river stairs.
The porter stood on the step in a clean green apron with PELLOW & DAUGHTERS stitched across it in yellow.
He'd sat up three nights with the younger girl, unpicking SONS.
He kept order.
"One at a time. No pushing. Yes, madam, that's the prince. No, he doesn't get served first. He's in the queue like anybody."
