Chapter 22: A Letter Home

Nanami wrote the letter at the Widow's old table, with the lamp turned low and her pencil worn down to a stub.

She wrote it in Japanese, which looked strange in the lamplight.

She tore up the first page, and the second, and the third.

The fourth one she kept.

"Dad," it began. "I'm alive, I'm not hurt, and I'm at work. I know that sounds like a lie."

"The firm sent me to audit a client in a place you won't find on a map. It has a very good cook."

"I am twenty-eight and I have a boyfriend who is eighty-three, and I will explain that in person if I can."

"Your mother is here. She is small, and she is rude about my handwriting. She has been writing to you for fifty-one years."

She stopped, and put her pencil down, and pressed the back of her wrist against her mouth.

Dravan sat on the floor by the door of the little room.

She had asked him to be in the room with her but not close, and he had stayed there for an hour.

"Take your time," he said.

"I'm taking it."

She wrote the last line in a hand that wandered.

"I'm putting my address at the bottom in case you can write back. I'm sorry I missed Sunday."
