Chapter 23: Ask Me

Nanami carried the notebook page up the east stair herself, and put it into her grandmother's hand.

Tae was awake in the Widow's chair by the stove, with a shawl around her and her eyes on the door.

She read the line once.

She read it a second time, with her lips moving.

Then she folded it along its crease and put it into the pocket over her heart, and buttoned the pocket.

"The porch light," she said. "I left it on, the night I went to the shop for tea."

"Dad doesn't say anything else."

"No. He wouldn't. He was five."

Her voice was perfectly dry, and her glasses were not.

Nanami knelt on the floor, and Tae laid her small hand on the top of her head, once.

It stayed there for a few seconds, light as a leaf.

"I am still angry," said Nanami into her knee.

"Yes."

"I'll be angry for a very long time."

"I hope so," said her grandmother. "It means we will have a long time."

That evening Dravan had the long table in the great hall set for everyone.
