Chapter 15: The Lullaby
The Blackthorn riders did not kill us.
They took our knives, strapped Aldric to a litter and walked us north for six hours under their bows.
They said their Alpha wished to see the trespassers himself.
Torin walked beside me with his hands bound and a very dry look on his face.
"I've had better holidays," he said.
The Blackthorn hall stood on a black rock above a frozen lake.
It was a barracks, not a house, hung with banners and the skins of wolves.
They marched us into the main hall at noon, and it was full.
At the far end, on a chair of antlers, sat the Blackthorn Alpha.
He was a huge gray man with a burned face and one pale eye.
On his right sat Delphine.
She wore a borrowed blue gown. Her hair was pinned up neatly, and she held a cup of tea.
Rowan stood at her knee.
He saw me, and his whole face lit up.
Then he looked at Delphine, and the light went out.
"There she is," Delphine said gently. "I'm so sorry, my lord. This is the woman I told you about."
The Blackthorn Alpha looked me over.
"The carrier," he said.
"The thief," said Delphine. "She took my daughter and she has tried for a week to take my son."
"My son," I said.
"Hush, dear. You're confused."
"I'm not confused." I walked forward until the guards caught my arms. "Is that what you sold him? A boy with the old blood and a Luna to rule through him?"
The Alpha's good eye moved from me to her.
"She says the boy is the last of Ashenfell," he said. "She says she is his mother and his regent, and the river valley will pay Blackthorn for a thousand years if I put her in Duskmoor's seat."
