Chapter 9: Delphine's Offer
Delphine set the tray down on Rowan's dresser and did not hurry.
"Come out of the doorway, both of you. You'll wake him."
We followed her into the sitting room next door, because the alternative was to fight in front of a sleeping child.
She poured two cups and put them on the low table.
"Sit, Morven. You've lost weight."
I stayed on my feet.
"Aldric," she said, lightly, "you look terrible."
"I've seen Rowan's hair," Aldric said.
"We covered that. It's a birthmark."
"It's the same as hers."
"Is it?" She tilted her head at me. "How odd. I always thought Morven dyed hers on purpose. For attention."
She said it without a flicker.
I realized she had been planning this answer since the rain.
"You painted it every month," I said. "For seven years. You said the pack stared."
"The pack did stare. Darling, you were an omega from the servants' wing who had been chosen by the Alpha. I was protecting you."
"You were protecting Rowan's hair from being seen."
"Of course I was. He's the heir."
"He's the heir because of his father. You didn't paint his hair for that."
Delphine's smile did not move.
"Let me say this kindly, Morven, because I do love you."
She folded her hands.
"You have a week-old baby who isn't safe outside a pack. You have no mate, because you threw him away. You have a council in six days, and in that council you will be the carrier who stole an heir. They will brand you. They will hunt you across every territory."
