Chapter 18: The ATM
I took the pins out of my mouth.
"We're with customers," I said. "If you need an alteration, there's a sign-up sheet on the counter."
"An alteration." Serena laughed. "I need a laugh. I heard there was a Lazzaro dress in the window of a shoe shop, and I had to see it."
The pants lady was standing on my platform in her granddaughter's trousers with one leg pinned.
She looked at Serena over her glasses.
The bride came out from behind the sheet in the ivory satin, holding the back closed.
Her grandmother was right behind her.
One of the cousins stood up in the bakery doorway next door. I shook my head at him through the glass. He sat back down.
Serena walked along my rack of tickets and flicked them with one finger.
"Pants," she said. "Pants. A christening gown. Oh, that's sweet."
"Don't touch those."
"Or what? You'll send me a bill?"
The bridesmaids giggled.
They were the girl who'd had the window desk and the girl in the gray sweater.
The one in gray had her phone up.
Serena stopped in front of the bride.
She looked at the unfinished satin with a pin in the hem.
"Is that a wedding dress?"
"Yes," the bride said.
Her chin was up, but her voice shook.
"Wow. Brave. A wedding in a shoe shop." Serena turned to me. "Did you tell her you used to pay people to like you? She should know she's in good hands."
She said the next part to the whole shop.
"Everybody knows what you are, Lucia. I should. I was on your payroll for three years."
The pants lady looked at me over her glasses.
"Serena."
"You know what's funny?"
She raised her voice so the street could hear it through the open door.
"Damiano used to have a nickname for her. In college. Did you ladies know that?"
