Chapter 55: The Christening Gown
Rita came to work on Tuesday.
She came in at eight like always, with her curls tied up in my old scarf, and went straight to the cutting table.
I put the navy trousers in front of her, still full of pins.
"Take them in where I chalked," I said. "You know his knees better than I do."
She looked at the trousers for a long time.
Then she picked up her shears.
Neither of us said anything else about it all week.
On Saturday the brick house smelled like starch.
Pasquale had the ironing board up in the kitchen, in front of the window over the fig tree.
He'd been ironing the christening gown for an hour.
I'd made it in June from what was left of my wedding dress. The ivory silk off the bottom of the bolt, enough for a baby and not one inch more.
A long skirt. Tiny sleeves. A row of covered buttons down the back that I'd sewn at two in the morning with Maddie asleep on my chest.
