Chapter 75: Two Postcards
I didn't read it.
It wasn't mine.
I put it face down on the counter under the brass bell and went back to the bride I was pinning.
I lasted barely ten minutes.
"Read it," the bride said, through her own mouthful of pins.
"It's addressed to my father."
"Then take it up to him. Fast."
At six I closed the shop and called upstairs.
"Dad. Mail."
Rita came down first, because she came down for anything. Then Dad, one step and the cane.
Then her brother came in from the street, from the site office, with his one gray-cuffed cane and the mended one, and his tie loose.
He'd started coming to the shop for dinner on weeknights, because Rita cooked and Dad didn't.
The cookie table was still in the corner by the window, where it had stood since the night of the show.
The baker still filled it every Saturday.
It still stood on Vito's first postcard, folded twice, under the short leg.
Dad sat down on Pasquale's wife's stool by the window and put on his reading glasses.
He looked at the cactus for a long time.
Then he turned it over.
"'Joe,'" he read.
"'A hundred and nine degrees in May. The pool is a bathtub. He talks through the ballgame. He puts sugar in everything, even the wine.'"
