"A lawyer, a ramp and a boy who can lie to his mother," Donna said from the bed. "That's all it takes to get a man out of a house."

"I have two of those," Warner said.

"Then fix the third before breakfast."

On Saturday at ten, Marguerite stood in a hard hat across town with a gold shovel, smiling for the newspaper at the groundbreaking of her tower.

Warner had been the one to tell us she would.

We stood at the garden door of her house, the lawyer in a gray suit, Caleb in a clean shirt and me.

Warner opened it from the inside.

He looked past us at the nurse, who had come out into the hall with her phone already in her hand.

"Mother wants you at the groundbreaking," he told her. "She says the photographers will ask for Grandfather."

"Mrs. Thayer would have told me herself."

"She's busy with the governor's aide. She's telling me."

The nurse put her phone to her ear.

Caleb took it out of her hand, gently.

"Ma'am," he said, "I'm sorry. Please don't."

"Give that back."

"I'm Mr. Thayer's attorney of thirty years," said the lawyer, stepping up with a folder. "He is competent, he has asked to leave, and he has the right to. If you stop him, you commit a crime. I'll write down your name and the time if you like."

The nurse looked at Warner.

Warner looked at the floor, and then he looked up and did something I had never seen him do.

He met her eyes and said, "Please."
