Chapter 23: Her Terms

Mara's POV

He sat on the steel table, in his wet coat, and I stood in front of him with the letter.

"Read it," I said.

He read it under the one live light.

It came from the hospital's board and it was two paragraphs long.

The federal agents had opened Conway's fireproof cabinet and found the original note, the forged one, with the check stubs clipped behind it.

The board regretted the error.

My name had been removed from the record.

A line at the bottom said my license was reinstated, effective at once.

Lucian put the letter down.

"You did that," he said.

"The agents did that. Lacey did that. You did the part where you didn't stop me."

"Mara."

"I'm not done."

I took a breath and found my place.

I'd said it over in the car all the way from the gate, and it still shook.

"I was Conway's for four years," I said. "I was yours for three weeks behind a gate. I've never in my life walked out of one by myself, and I needed to know I could."

"And you could."

"Yes. I'm going to say what I want now. You'll say yes or no."

"Yes."

"You haven't heard it."

"I'm still saying yes."

I almost laughed.

"One," I said. "I work. Mount Sinai wants me back in the cardiac unit in the new year. I'll operate under my own name and you will never ask me to stop."

"Never."

"Two. I come and go. No men unless I ask for them. If I'm gone for a night, you don't send a car."

His jaw tightened, and then it eased.

"If you're gone for a night," he said, "you leave a note."

"I'll leave a note. Three. Every morning of your life, I take your pulse, and you take your pills when I tell you."
