Chapter 4: Her Husband at the Gate

The rain had stopped, and the sun made the iron gates look almost polite.

Conway stood outside them in a navy suit with a lawyer on one side and a police captain on the other.

My husband looked rested. He had slept well after I left.

"There she is," Conway said, loud enough for the men on the wall to hear. "Mara, sweetheart. Thank God."

I stopped on the inside of the bars, with two of Lucian's guards at my back.

I was wearing a borrowed sweater and no ring, and my hair was still wet from the shower.

"Captain," Conway said, turning to him, "my wife hasn't been herself for months. She took a firearm from our home last night and drove it to a known criminal's house. I'm afraid she's unwell."

"Mr. Driscoll," the captain said, uncomfortably.

"She needs an evaluation. A doctor. I'm only asking that she come home and see one."

Every man on that wall was listening.

The lawyer shifted a leather folder into view.

"I have a voluntary admission form already filled in," he said. "It only needs her signature."

I looked at the form, and then at Conway.

For four years he had introduced me at dinners as his useless trophy wife, and every one of those guests had laughed.

I had laughed too, to be polite.

"I'm not unwell," I said. "I'm staying."

"You're not thinking clearly," Conway said gently. "You haven't slept."

"I watched you in our bed with Lacey Burke," I said, as loudly as he'd spoken. "I slept fine. I'm clear enough that I took your gun so you couldn't use it on me."
