Chapter 5: Doctor, Your Hands

I asked him that night, in his sitting room, with the door locked and the dead doctor's case open between us.

"Conway says someone gave away your route on the bridge."

"Conway Driscoll says a great many things." Lucian didn't look up from the window. "My driver changed the route twenty minutes before we left. He died on the Verrazzano. He can't say who he told."

"Who knew you were leaving?"

"The house," he said. "All of it."

So I let it go and took his pulse again.

It was fifty-two, steadier than the night before. It had been two days without the tea or the pills, and his color was coming back.

I said so, and he looked at me for a long moment and said nothing.

At one in the morning I was still in the chair by his bed, wrapped in a blanket, listening to him breathe.

I must have dozed, because the next thing I knew he was standing at the window with one hand flat on the glass.

"Lucian."

"My phone," he said. "Aldo said he would call."

"It's one o'clock. Sit down."

"I'm fine."

He took one step toward the table and stopped.

His hand went to his chest.

I was out of the chair before he moved again.

When his knees went, I caught his weight as far as I could and brought him down onto the rug.
