Chapter 15: Let Her See It
Marla's kitchen light was the only one on at the back of the clubhouse lot.
She let us in through the screen door in her housecoat, her reading glasses on their cord.
She looked at Jesse's cut and then at me.
"He comes with you?"
"He does."
"Then he can peel potatoes."
Lacey sat at the steel prep table with both hands around a mug.
She had washed her face, and she looked about nineteen.
I set Boone's sack down between the salt and the flour, and for a second nobody said anything.
"Boone brought the fund book," I said. "Sixty-one thousand dollars, in coffee cans, in Hoyt's gun room."
Marla took off her glasses and pressed her fingers against her eyes.
"I knew it," she said. "I knew it, and I told myself it was only the truck."
"You didn't know about the cans."
"I knew he stopped letting me see the book." She put the glasses back on. "A hundred and fifty a month from boys who work the oil rigs, and he was buying a lake house."
Jesse sat down across from Lacey and picked up a potato and a knife.
He did it without being asked twice, and Marla watched him do it and nodded once.
"Lacey," I said. "You wanted to show me something."
"Yes."
She slid her phone across the steel.
"Six weeks ago, in Hoyt's office," she said. "When I asked him for the lookout night. I knew him by then. I knew he'd say one thing and do another, so I turned on the recorder and left my phone in my apron."
