Chapter 20: Goodbye at the Gate
I pulled on my jeans and my father's flannel and went out to the gate barefoot.
Boone sat on his bike in the gray light with his helmet in his lap.
He had shaved.
He looked younger and smaller without the beard, and the split in his lip had scabbed over.
"Jesse's truck just went by," he said. "He didn't stop."
"I saw."
"He saw me here and drove right past." Boone rubbed his face. "That's my fault, too."
"What do you want, Boone?"
"Two things." He reached into his jacket and held out a folded paper through the bars. "The first's signed. All of it. The house is yours, I don't want it."
I took it and read the top line.
It was the divorce petition, with his name already at the bottom in blue ink.
"The second?"
"I want to say it to your face, once, and then I'll never come near here again."
"Say it."
He took a breath.
"I'm sorry I made you a way to get a piece of dirt," he said. "I'm sorry I stood in that room Saturday and looked at the floor. You built me a window to watch me come home, and I never once came home to it."
I stood very still.
It was the first thing he had said to me in months that was not for himself.
"I'm not going to say it's all right," I said.
"I don't want you to."
"Where will you go?"
"My sister's in Boise." He gave a small, crooked smile. "I've got a duffel bag and a screwdriver. I'll find a job."
