Chapter 12: Ninety-Nine Point Nine Nine
Faye walked down the middle of the room with the envelope held out in front of her.
Forty bikers made way without a word.
"I opened it in the car," she said. "I read it three times. I wanted you to hear it from the page, Dad, and not from me."
Boone took the envelope with his good hand.
He couldn't tear it open with one arm, so he pushed it into my lap.
"Ro. Please."
My fingers were not steady either.
I slit the flap with my thumbnail and unfolded a single sheet with a table down the middle.
I found the line near the bottom and read it out loud.
"Probability of paternity, Boone Kilgore and Faye Kilgore. Ninety-nine point nine nine percent."
Nobody moved.
"Say it again," Boone said hoarsely.
"She's yours. She's always been yours."
His knees went.
He caught himself on the edge of the table and slid down until he was sitting on the floor with his back against the leg of it.
Forty grown men looked at the ceiling, or at their boots.
Faye stood over him with her arms wrapped around her waist.
"I'm sorry," Boone said.
"Don't."
"I thought you weren't mine. For twenty-two years I thought it."
"I know. I heard everything on the porch through the door."
"I looked at you and I couldn't."
"You were wrong."
"I know I was wrong."
"You missed my whole life."
"I know."
His face was wet, and he didn't wipe it.
"Faye, I don't have anything that makes it right."
