Chapter 18: Twelve Weeks and Four Days
Boone and Faye got me out of the clubhouse between them, and Boone did not make a sound about his ribs.
I told them I could walk.
Boone told me to shut up and lean on him.
Faye ran ahead with the truck keys, and Birdie held the door.
I would have argued longer, but I was too scared.
The ride to the hospital took fourteen minutes.
I counted them, with my hand pressed flat on my belly.
The cramp had eased halfway there, and I could not tell whether that was good.
Boone sat in the back seat with my head on his thigh, and he did not touch me beyond that.
His hand hovered an inch above my hair the whole way, and never came down.
I noticed.
I didn't say so.
The same doctor from the first visit met us at the OB triage desk, and she took one look at me.
"Mrs. Kilgore. I told you two weeks off your feet."
"I know."
"Where have you been?"
"At a motel, a clubhouse and my own front porch."
"That's not resting."
"I'm aware, Doctor."
She wheeled me behind a curtain and told Faye to wait outside.
Then she looked at Boone.
"Are you the father?"
My stomach dropped, because I had never said it to anyone's face.
Boone didn't answer.
He looked at me.
It was the first thing he had asked of me all week, and he asked it with his eyes, in front of a stranger.
I thought about Rusty's last smile.
I thought about the twenty-two years Boone had spent not asking the right question.
"Yes," I said. "He's the father."
His whole body shifted.
He put his good hand over his mouth and turned toward the curtain.
