Chapter 19: The Pink Helmet
Boone's POV
The Harley came out of the shop on Tuesday with a new fork, new pipes and a clean tank.
I stood in Birdie's driveway and looked at it for a full minute.
I had put it into a guardrail at seventy miles an hour with a bottle in me.
I had no business owning it, and I couldn't make myself sell it yet.
Faye walked up in jeans and her father's old boots, with her curls tied back.
"Don't tell me you're going to give a speech," she said.
"I have one."
"Dad."
"It's short."
She folded her arms.
"Go."
"I never let you on this bike, and I told myself it was because it was dangerous."
"It was a lie?"
"Yeah."
"Why?"
I made myself look at her face.
It had my jaw.
Anyone could have seen it from across a room.
"Rusty told me you weren't mine," I said. "And I believed him. When you were six, you asked for a ride, and I told you no because I thought you were another man's kid and I couldn't stand to feel you holding on to me."
"I was yours."
"I know that now."
"I was six."
"I know."
She said nothing for a moment.
"And at sixteen?"
"At sixteen you looked so much like her, and so much like me, and I still said no, because I'd said it for ten years and I couldn't take it back."
"You couldn't just say sorry?"
"I didn't know how. I'm not a man who does that. I never was."
"You're learning."
"I'm learning at forty-four."
"Better late than never," she said, and her voice shook on it.
I held out the helmet.
I had bought it three days ago at a shop in Canyon.
