Chapter 22: Highest Honors
Boone wore a clean white shirt with the sleeves buttoned over the bruises, and he sat in the front row of the nursing school auditorium with his hat on his knee.
I sat beside him.
Nobody in the building could tell we had been laughing in a workshop four hours earlier.
Birdie sat on my other side in a purple dress, with a dish towel folded in her purse.
Behind us, filling six rows to the back wall, was the Ridge Saints.
Forty bikers in their cuts and clean jeans, with their boots shined.
The people from the other families kept turning around to look.
"Is that a motorcycle club?" a woman whispered behind us.
"That's her father's club," Birdie said without turning. "Mind your purse."
I had to bite my lip.
When they called Faye's name, the whole back half of the room stood up.
"Faye Kilgore. Highest honors in the nursing program."
She walked across the stage in her cap and gown, with her curls pinned up and her chin high.
Boone made a noise beside me that I had never heard from him.
It was a short cough, and then a wet breath, and then he put his hand over his face.
I put my hand on his back.
I hadn't planned to, and I didn't move it.
The dean handed her a certificate, and then he handed her the microphone.
"I was told I could say a few words," Faye said.
The auditorium went quiet.
"I want to thank my mother, who framed a house with her own hands and then framed a whole life for me."
I looked down at my lap.
