Chapter 23: A Straight Line
My water broke on the porch on a Sunday in March, in front of everyone.
We were eating Birdie's pot roast at the long table Boone had built for me out of old barn wood.
I stood up to get the gravy, and something warm ran down my legs onto the boards.
"Oh," I said.
Boone's fork hit his plate.
"Ro?"
"It's not time. I'm three weeks early."
"Tell that to the floor," Faye said, already on her feet.
She was in her scrubs, because she had picked up a shift at the hospital and come straight over.
Birdie stood up with the dish towel in her hand and began issuing orders.
"Boone, get the truck. Faye, the bag by the door. Ramona, sit down and don't you dare cross your legs."
"I can't sit, I'm going to..."
A contraction took the rest of the sentence.
It was hard and low, and it dropped me over the back of the chair with a gasp.
Boone was behind me in a second, with his arms under mine.
"I've got you."
"I'm having a baby on my own porch."
"You are not. We're going."
"I'm forty-one."
"I know."
"The doctor said high risk."
"I know, Ro. I've got you."
He carried me to the truck himself, with no sling and no cracked ribs left to blame, and he set me in the passenger seat with his hand under my head.
Faye took the back seat with the bag.
"Time them," she told Birdie, who was climbing in beside her. "Every contraction. Write it down."
"I'm a cook, not a midwife."
