Chapter 14: First Kiss

Clara's POV

"The offer doesn't get kinder with time," Rhett said in my ear.

I stood in the dark guest room with my back against the door.

"And if I don't sign?"

"Then you stay in that house with a man who will die in his bed," Rhett said pleasantly. "And you know how fast beds turn dangerous."

My hand shook around the phone.

"I'll think about it."

"Lunch, Thursday, one o'clock. Bring your answer."

He hung up.

I stood there with my own heartbeat in my ears.

Then, down the hall, faint and desperate, I heard my name.

Clara. Clara. Clara.

I ran barefoot to the suite and shoved the door open.

Damian lay with his eyes on the doorway and his jaw set.

"You heard," I said.

"All of it." His voice was a rough whisper, but it was stronger than it had been that evening. "Come here."

I sat on the edge of the bed.

"I'm going to say what I think out loud from now on," he said. "You hear it anyway. I'm tired of making you dig for it."

"Then say it."

"You think Rhett is right. You think you're only here for the money."

I looked at my hands.

"I think it," I said. "I don't know if it's true."

"I know it isn't."

"How?"

"Because I've listened to you for ten days, and the money is the quietest thing in your head." His eyes held mine. "I'd like to touch your face. You'll have to ask me."

My mouth went dry.

"Touch my face," I said.

His hand lifted off the sheet, slowly, and the fingers shook.

They reached my jaw.

His thumb moved along it, and then along my bottom lip, and my breath stopped in my throat.
