Chapter 18: His Father's Side
Cory's father stood on my parents' porch in a wet raincoat.
He was sixty-six, with Cory's jaw and a rigid back.
He did not say hello.
"Where is she?" he said to my mother.
"She's right here," I said, behind her. "Come in, Mr. Kester."
He walked into the kitchen without waiting.
My father stood up from the table.
The two men looked at each other.
They had shared a wedding toast five years ago.
"Sit down," my father said. "We were having dinner."
"I'm not here for dinner."
"Then stand," my father said. "It's my house."
Mr. Kester turned to me.
"My son is sitting in the dark in his kitchen with a bottle. His job is hanging on an audit. His name is all over the firm. And the story going around is that he had a woman in a wedding dress."
"That part is true."
"Beth."
"It's true," I said. "I was there. I have photographs."
His mouth tightened.
"I'm not here to defend that. I'm here to ask what you meant by telling two hundred people he's the reason you couldn't conceive. That's his private medical matter."
"It was my medical matter too."
"Beth..."
"For four years I took the shots. The doctor gave me my chart last week. Every test I ever had is normal."
"You can't know that."
"I can." I took the folded copy of the clinic report out of my purse and held it out. "Read it. Then ask your son why Whitney Ames is the only name on his privacy form."
He didn't take it at first.
