Chapter 16: Eye Level

On Easter Monday Rudy got me in the alley with a bucket.

It was Dyngus Day, when Polish boys soak the girls they like, and he had waited at the back gate since seven.

I came down the rear stairs in my bus coat with my thermos and got the whole bucket in the face.

"Rudolf Kasprzak," I said, with water running off my braid.

"It's tradition, Renia."

"It's April," I said. "It's forty degrees."

"The tradition is older than the weather."

I dropped the thermos on the step and went at him with both hands.

He caught me around the waist, laughing, and swung me into the shadow of the garage.

My coat was soaked through, and so was his shirt, and when he kissed me his beard dripped on my chin.

He tasted of coffee and cold water.

I pushed him back against the garage door and got my fingers into his wet collar.

"You're shaking," I said.

"I'm freezing. You did that to me on purpose."

"I did nothing," I said.

"You were born doing it."

I bit his lower lip, and he groaned, and the metal door boomed behind his back.
