Chapter 3: The Drain
Rudy climbs into Ren's bathtub with her, tells her what his father wanted to hear on the stairs, and she laughs for the first time since her mother's funeral.
"The drain is fine," Rudy said, from his knees on my bathroom floor.
He had the plunger in one hand and he was holding it upright.
"I told you it was slow," I said.
"It's not slow. I ran the water. It goes down like water."
He looked up at me with his coat still on.
"I know nothing about plumbing, Renia, and even I can tell."
"Then why did Cas send you?" I asked.
"Because he's a coward, and he's in love with you, and he doesn't know it yet."
I laughed so suddenly it hurt.
It was the first real laugh I'd had since my mother's funeral.
Rudy heard it and his whole face changed, and he set the plunger down in the sink.
"There it is," he said softly. "Pop said you laughed at his jokes. He told them wrong on purpose, you know. To hear it."
"I know," I said. "I figured it out in October."
"He was a sneaky old man."
I turned the tap on the old clawfoot tub as hot as it went.
I took my braid down while the water ran, and I felt Rudy watching me do it.
"I'm going to take a bath," I said. "I've been up twenty-two hours, and I smell like diesel."
"Also I kissed your brother in front of you," I said, "and he ate me out on your father's table."
"I'll wait in the kitchen," Rudy said.
"You won't."
He stood up.
He took his coat off, slowly, and hung it on the hook behind the door.
He stood there in a flannel shirt with his sleeves rolled and his big hands hanging empty.
Rudy was a thick, solid man with a belly he never apologized for and a beard going red and gray.
I had seen his chest once through an open shirt at a barbecue, and I had thought about it for a year.
"You start it," he said. "Cas said. He said, 'She starts it, Rudy, and if she tells you to go you go.'"
"Cas said that?"
"He said it twice." He grinned. "He's all bark. Tell me what you want, Renia."
I pulled my shirt over my head and let it drop.
"I want you to take your clothes off," I said, "and get in this tub."
He didn't need the second invitation.
He undid his buttons with fingers that shook just a little.
There was the chest, broad and covered in curling hair, and the soft belly.
Then he shoved his jeans down with his boxers in one go.
He was thick everywhere.
His cock stood heavy and flushed against his stomach, long and blunt, and I looked at it for a long moment, and he let me.
"Well," Rudy said, a little hoarsely. "It's not shy."
"No," I said. "I don't think it is."
I stripped the rest of the way, and he looked at me with his mouth open and his hands lifting and falling.
"You can touch," I said.
"If I touch, I'm going to say stupid things."
"Say them."
He put his hands on my waist, then slid them up my ribs and around to my back, and he pulled me against his chest.
His skin was hot, and the hair was rough on my nipples, and his cock pressed into my stomach, hard and insistent.
"God, you're soft," Rudy whispered into my hair.
"You're so soft. I've thought about how you'd feel since the barbecue. I've thought about it in the walk-in cooler. Don't tell Cas."
"I'll tell Cas you were thinking about it in the cooler."
"He'd want to hear," Rudy said, and kissed me.
His kiss was nothing like his brother's.
It was slow, warm and wet, with his beard brushing my chin and a laugh at the edges.
When I opened my mouth he groaned and sucked on my tongue.
The tub was filling.
Steam fogged the mirror.
I stepped over the rim and sank into water so hot it stung my skin pink, and I held out my hand to him.
He climbed in behind me with a great slosh, and the water rose and spilled onto the tile.
"Oh, hell," he said. "Pop's going to haunt me for the floor."
"Come here."
I turned around in the water and straddled his thighs.
His cock slid hot and heavy between my legs, not inside, just there, and he gripped my hips.
"I'm on the pill," I said. "I should say that now."
"Good," Rudy said. "That's good. I wasn't going to ask. I was going to wait until you told me."
He swallowed.
"It doesn't stop me thinking about it, though," he said.
"Thinking about what?"
"Pop used to say," he said, "every night at that table, he wanted to hear a kid run down those stairs before he died."
"A kid in this house. And every time I look at you I think, Jesus, Rudy, no."
He kissed my shoulder.
"And then I think about it anyway. About you with a belly, round, coming down to breakfast in one of my shirts."
"About how I'd feel pouring myself into you until you couldn't tell where I stopped."
I felt it in my knees.
I reached down between us and took him in my hand, and he made a low, broken sound against my neck.
"Rudy," I said. "Shut up and fuck me."
"Yes, ma'am."
I lifted myself, lined him up, and sank down slowly.
He was so thick it took a long time.
I took him an inch at a time, feeling every inch of the stretch, with the hot water lapping at my waist.
When I had all of him I stopped and just sat there, full, with my forehead against his.
"Oh, Renia," he said. "Oh, my God."
"Is that all right?"
"It's the best thing that's happened to me in nine years."
I started to move.
I rocked on him slowly at first, and the water sloshed over the side and ran across the tile.
He held my hips and watched my face.
"Look at you," he said. "Look at you taking me."
"Keep talking."
"You're perfect. You're so hot inside it's ridiculous. You feel like you were made for it."
I rode him harder.
I braced my hands on his shoulders and used the rim of the tub for leverage.
The wet slapping sound echoed off the old tile, and he stopped talking and just said my name.
"Ren. Renia. Ren."
I reached between us and rubbed my clit with two fingers, and he saw, and his eyes went black.
"Do it," he said. "Come on my cock. I want to feel it."
"I'm close."
"I know. I can feel you clench. Do it for me, baby, go on."
I came with a cry I pushed into his neck.
My body clamped down on him and shook, and he held on and groaned.
He thrust up into me twice, hard, and his hands tightened on my hips so much it bruised.
"Ren, I'm going to..."
"Do it," I said. "Come in me."
He came with his head thrown back against the tile, hard, pulsing deep inside me.
I felt every pulse.
I did not climb off him.
He was still hard inside me, and I felt him twitch when I shifted.
"I'm not finished," I said.
I turned slowly on his lap, with him still inside me, until my back was against his chest and my knees were on either side of his thighs.
The water had gone warm instead of hot, and it lapped at my breasts.
"Oh, Jesus," Rudy said into my neck. "Oh, that's new."
He wrapped both arms around me.
One hand came up to cup my breast, and the other slid down my belly and between my legs, and he found my clit with two blunt fingers.
"Let me do the work," he said.
He rocked me back and forth on him, small and slow, with the water moving in the tub and his fingers circling.
"You feel that? That's you. That's all you."
"Rudy," I said.
"I want you to come again like this. I want to feel it with my whole chest."
"It's too soon," I said.
"You're a liar, Renia. You're so wet I can feel it in the water."
I laughed and moaned in the same breath.
He kept up the slow rocking and the circling fingers and a low stream of nonsense in my ear, filthy and warm.
He told me how I would look round, and how I would look happy, and how he would carry me up and down those stairs himself.
The second one climbed through me slowly, and then all at once.
I came with my head back on his shoulder and his name in my mouth, and this time he held me until it finished.
Afterward we sat in the cooling water with me draped across his chest.
His heartbeat knocked under my cheek, and his fingers moved through my wet hair.
"That's one," Rudy said, after a long time.
"One what?"
"One out of thirty days I'm not going to forget."
I laughed again, into his chest.
When the water was cold he climbed out first and held a towel for me.
He wrapped it around my shoulders and rubbed my arms until the shivering stopped.
At the door he kissed my forehead.
"Joey's coming," he said. "Probably tomorrow. He's been practicing what to say for a year, and he's going to say it wrong. Be kind."
"I'm always kind."
"Not to us you're not," Rudy said fondly, and left.
I slept eleven hours.
The next morning at ten to six I came up the back stairs off my run.
Joey was sitting on the landing outside my door in his uniform, with two paper cups of coffee in his hands.
He looked up.
"Renata Solis," he said, his voice cracking on all of it.
