On the twelfth day I drove the Archer Avenue bus on a split, nine in the morning to one in the afternoon.
I did it on four hours of sleep and a thermos of Rudy's coffee.
The bus was nearly full.
It was nineteen degrees and bright, the windows were fogged, and the heater above my head ticked and smelled of dust.
At Kedzie a woman got on with a rolling cart and a parish pin on her coat.
She was about sixty-five, in a good wool hat, and she tapped her card, looked up at me, and stopped.
"You're the girl on Kolin," she said.
"Good morning, ma'am. Move on back, please."
"The second floor over the Kasprzak boys. My daughter's friend lives across the street."
She spoke clearly enough for the first six rows.
"She says you're living with all three of them."
