Chapter 9: His Father's Bed
Stan's door was open when I came downstairs at ten, and the lamp inside was on.
I stopped in the hall.
The room smelled of Old Spice and cough drops and a year of closed windows.
There was an iron bed with a white chenille spread, a dresser with his comb on it, and a crucifix over the headboard.
His reading glasses lay folded on the nightstand.
Cas stood at the window with his back to me.
Rudy and Joey sat on the end of the bed in clean shirts, side by side, not talking.
"I haven't opened this room since the funeral," Cas said, without turning.
"We don't have to," I said.
"I want you in it." He turned around. "I want him to see."
Rudy let out a short, unsteady laugh.
"Pop would've asked for a front-row seat," he said.
"Rudy," Joey said.
"What? He would have."
"He would have," Cas agreed, and the corner of his mouth moved.
It was the first time I had seen him smile in a year.
I closed the door behind me and turned the key.
Then I started unbuttoning my shirt, and the three of them watched me do it.
Rudy sat forward with his elbows on his knees.
Joey held very still.
Cas watched my hands, and my throat, and then my breasts as the shirt fell open.
He crossed the room slowly and took the shirt off my shoulders with both hands.
"Lie down," I told him.
"Ren."
"You, in the middle. Take your clothes off first."
He undressed in front of his brothers without a word.
He was broad and brown from summer, gray at the chest and the temples, with old scars on his forearms.
His heavy cock was already rising against his stomach.
He lay back against Stan's pillows, and the iron bed creaked.
I pushed down my leggings and stood bare in the lamplight, and the room went quiet.
