Chapter 23: Twelve Knives

Twelve black pickups sat in a row in Dunlap's gravel lot, nose to the diner.

Their drivers sat at the counter in a row of their own.

They had not touched their pie.

I stood in the doorway with the bell still ringing over my head.

Dacre came in behind me, and the whole line of hunters stood up.

"Sit," he said. "You're not on duty."

"We are, Majesty," said the woman with the cropped head. "In a way."

She was at the end of the row.

A hunting knife lay flat on the counter in front of her, point toward the wall.

So was every other hunter.

Twelve knives lay in a line, and the cook behind the counter looked from the knives to his clean counter and said nothing.

"What's this?" I said.

The woman turned on her stool.

She had a plain, weathered face and a scar through one eyebrow.

I realized she was about my age.

"I'm the hunt's second," she said. "I've tracked a roster number for nine years. Until I stood on the bridge and watched you drop a shooter's weapon from three hundred yards, I thought you'd be a hard old man."
