Chapter 7: Four Phones

Lindahl Marine Supply sat on a corner lot near the harbor, with kayaks stacked outside and a hand-painted sign I had finished myself two summers ago.

I stood at the door at noon with my keys in my fist.

Magnus had wanted to come.

I told him that if I walked in with him, Greta would say I hadn't come alone, and the whole thing would be about him.

"Text me," he'd said.

"If I need you."

"Text me anyway."

Inside, the store was busy.

Four customers browsed the rope aisle, and two employees in red vests worked the counter.

Trevor stood behind the register in a clean shirt with his hair combed, looking at me sadly.

Greta sat on a stool by the lifejackets.

Shelby was not there.

"Linnea," Trevor said, in the voice he used on customers. "Thank you for coming."

"Your mother said you had something to say."

"I do." He came around the counter and put a hand on his chest. "I owe you an apology. I was weak. I let people get in my head, and I let you go without a fight."

One of the customers turned to look.

"That's it?"

"I want you to come home," he said. "We'll do it right. A real engagement, a real day. And Mom has agreed to something."

Greta stood and opened her purse.

She took out a folded set of papers and laid them on the counter between the fishing lures.

"An annulment," she said. "Prepared by my lawyer. You sign, the marriage is erased, and no one need ever know. Trevor's loan will be paid in full out of my own account."

"And Magnus loses the yard."

"Magnus was never going to keep it."
