He signed it.
I watched the pen move across the bottom of the page.
His hand didn't shake this time.
Ethan said my name, but I was already pushing the glass door open.
Harold looked up with the paper in his fingers.
"Dr. Ashworth, you're suspended. You can't be in a patient's room."
"I'm not here as his doctor."
I stood at the foot of the bed.
Nathaniel's face was gray against the pillow. There was a bruise across his collarbone the exact shape of a seatbelt.
"You were unconscious," I said. "Your pressure was sixty over thirty. There was nobody to ask."
"Harold says there's always somebody to ask."
"Harold wasn't there."
"Neither were you." His voice was raw from the breathing tube. "When I woke up."
I didn't say anything.
"I woke up in this bed to a fruit basket," he said. "A fruit basket, Natalie. And a nurse told me who operated."
