I didn't take the chain off.
"How do you know about his arm?"
"Because Harold called my lawyer at six o'clock tonight. He was sweating so hard I could hear it."
Camille leaned on the doorframe.
"He offered to pay all my legal fees. A million dollars, if I tell the judge you put those pills in the champagne yourself."
"And you came here instead."
"I came here first. There's a difference."
She took a phone out of her coat pocket and turned the screen toward me.
A voice file. Less than a minute.
"I record everybody, Natalie. I recorded you in the diner. I recorded Stuart every time he got greedy."
She pressed play.
The sound was muffled.
But I knew Pierce's voice.
And I knew the other one.
"I paid for the Ashworth girl, Stuart. Eight hundred thousand. I don't want excuses. I want her on your table Saturday night."
Camille stopped it.
My hands had gone cold on the door.
