Chapter 6: The Board

Nobody in that glass room said a word while the phone rang.

Twelve executives stared at the table.

Camille peeked at me over the edge of her blanket.

She was smiling.

"Harold," Nathaniel said warmly into the phone. "Sorry to call so early. It's about my wife."

I didn't wait to hear the rest.

I picked the four pieces of the report off the table and put them in my pocket.

Then I walked out.

The board met at eight the next morning.

The boardroom was on the top floor of the Ashworth Wing.

Of course it was.

Seven board members sat along one side of a long walnut table.

Harold Weiss sat in the middle, a soft, pink man with a bow tie.

Nathaniel sat at the end.

Camille sat beside him in a wheelchair she didn't need.

Margaret stood behind her with a hand on her shoulder.

Ethan and I sat across from all of them.

"This is very uncomfortable," Harold began. "Mr. Ashworth has raised serious concerns."

"I bet he has," Ethan said.

Harold ignored him.

"Mrs. Ashworth was brought back without board approval. She's been out of practice for three years. And now there's a question about a lab sample involving a family friend."

"There's no question," I said. "There's a result."

"A result," Nathaniel said, "run by the woman who wants a divorce and half my money."

"I signed a prenup. I don't get half of anything."

A board member at the end, an older woman with reading glasses, looked up at that.

Nathaniel kept going.

"She's unstable. She tore up a donor form in our kitchen. She screamed at a dying woman at dinner. Now she has access to patients."

Margaret nodded along.

"She mocked that poor girl's illness in front of the staff."

Camille coughed into her hand.

Harold folded his fingers.

"Given Ashworth Capital's generosity to this institution, I think the prudent move is to end Mrs. Ashworth's fellowship today. Quietly."
