The hall went quiet behind Torin's back.

Two hundred Coldwater wolves looked at the empty chair, then at me.

Lucian put down his cup with a little laugh.

"Did I say something?"

I stood up.

"Yes," I said. "You've been saying it for a week. Say it again."

"Bron."

"At Dunmere, on the stair, you told me you'd find a way to keep me close. You told me that in a year I'd be glad."

I let it hang in the air.

"You're engaged to the woman sitting right beside you."

Linnet had gone white.

The elders had begun to murmur, and Hester, at the far end, set down her spoon.

"It was a joke," Lucian said. "She's misunderstood. Bron has always been dramatic, and she's still upset about..."

"About you, yes," I said. "I was. I'm not now."

I took a breath, and my voice carried down the long hall.

"I stood in front of two packs and chose a husband because I would rather have anyone in the Marches than a man who would say that to a bride. I'm glad I did. He's worth ten of you."

Nobody moved.

Lucian's face had gone a dull, ugly red.

"Lucian," Linnet said quietly. "Outside."

She did not cover for him this time.

She stood, and she did not look at me, and she walked out with her back very straight.

He went after her.

His riders glanced at each other.
