Chapter 5: The Cold Room

My father gave us the east wing for the night, two rooms with a shared passage between them.

I had asked for exactly that.

Torin walked me to my door, said "Goodnight, Bronwyn" like a guest in a stranger's house, and went off down the passage to speak with my father about the missing riders.

I stood in the doorway until his boots were gone.

Then I took off Linnet's grey cloak, hung it on the peg, and went to his room.

I had until he finished talking with my father.

His saddlebags sat on the chair by the bed, still strapped, with a wet coat thrown over them.

I unbuckled the left one first.

A shirt. A pair of worn gloves. A tin of salve. A little wooden horse, carved by a child, with one ear chipped off.

I held that one a moment.

Then I put it back carefully, exactly where it had been.

The right bag held a knife roll.

My heart jumped.

I untied it with shaking fingers.

There were four blades in it, a skinning knife, a field knife, a heavy hunting knife, and a sharp little thing for kindling.

None of them had a grey wolf's head on the hilt.

I turned each one over twice, looking for the crest.

Nothing.

"It's not in there."

I didn't scream.

I wish I could say that. I jerked around so fast the roll slipped off my knees and three knives hit the floorboards, one after another.

Torin stood in the door with his shoulder against the frame.

He had taken off his coat. His shirtsleeves were rolled to the elbow, and the lamplight showed his forearms, with old scars running across both.
