Chapter 17: Pelican Key
The detectives got into the tablet on December ninth.
The woman detective came out to the shack that night and sat at Nan's kitchen table and didn't eat the pie.
That was how I knew it was bad.
"I'm not going to describe it to you," she said. "You lived it. But she kept everything."
"Everything?"
"Every clip from that camera. Hundreds. She saved them in folders by month." She rubbed her eyes. "And in a lot of them, she recorded herself watching."
"There's more," the detective said. "The tablet's location history puts it at the Pelican Key dock on June fourteenth, from eleven forty at night to a quarter past one. Same as Eli's tracker. Same as the boat."
"So you can arrest her."
"The judge signs the warrant Friday afternoon. The day of the launch."
She looked at me across the table.
"She'll be on that island with two hundred people and a dock and a fleet of boats. I want her on the island. I don't want her in Naples with a lawyer and a passport."
