Chapter 14: Keegan's Price

"We're not buying anything from you," Abel said.

He had come down two steps and stood between Keegan and me, with his hands loose at his sides.

"I'm not talking to you," Keegan said. "Cor. Five minutes. Please."

Hattie opened the screen door behind us in her bathrobe, with her braid over her shoulder.

"Let him in the kitchen," she said. "I don't take business on a porch."

Keegan sat at the table where I had learned the rules of being a ghost.

He set the envelope in front of him and squared it with the table edge.

Hattie put a cup of tea beside his hand, and he didn't touch it.

"Imogen has cut me out," he said.

None of us said a word.

"The petition. The one she filed. I signed an affidavit that said I was the father, because she said we'd file together." His voice was thin. "It names her, Cor. Only her. Her lawyer says I'm a witness."

"A witness," I said.

"She told me last night I'd be welcome to visit." He laughed, and it came out wrong. "In my own house."

"That sounds hard," Hattie said, pleasantly.

He ignored her.

"I was at her workshop on March thirtieth. I went to ask about the money for the show."

He slid three printed photographs out of the envelope and fanned them on the table.

The first showed a long steel case on a workbench with the lid open.

Inside lay a row of thick curved blades, and each one had a gray shine along its edge.

The second showed the same bench with a second case beside it, filled with thin gold blades, the kind that fold when you press them.

"Those are the show blades," Keegan said. "The gold ones. And that's the steel set."
