I Discharged Two Shrimper Brothers, Then Took Them Both Home novel · Chapter 23 of 24
Chapter 23: Opening Day
At four-thirty Monday morning the creek was black and flat, and Miss Lorraine's running lights were on.
I stood on the dock in my navy scrubs with a travel mug of coffee, because I had patients at seven.
It was the first day of the new slip.
The old captain in the Vietnam cap had spent Sunday night on the phone, and by sunrise his whole family had been up.
He owned the dock next door to the fish house, and he had owned it for forty years.
He had one slip empty, at the end, with deep water and a fresh coat of paint on the pilings.
"It's been sitting there since my brother passed," he'd told Rhett on the pier, with the horns still ringing. "Put your boat in it. No rent till you land your first ten thousand pounds."
Rhett had stood very still with his hat in his hand.
Then he had shaken the old man's hand and could not speak.
That was the whole lease.
