Chapter 4: What Color

"Sign what?" I said.

"The oath. Whatever it is." He was shivering and trying not to. "Swear it for Dad and then leave."

Beck looked from him to me.

"I'll be on the porch," he said quietly, and went past Tobin out into the rain.

Tobin watched him go with his lip curled.

"Who's that?"

"A friend."

"You don't have friends. You've been in a cave."

"People in caves have friends," I said. "Come inside. You're dripping."

He didn't want to.

He came in anyway, because it was cold, and he was fifteen, and his body didn't care what his pride wanted.

I gave him my father's old flannel blanket off the back of the couch.

He held it, then wrapped it round his shoulders.

"Coral says if you don't swear it, we lose everything," he said. "The house. The pack. She says the council takes the seat and gives it to some stranger, and Dad gets thrown out, and I get shipped off to some pack in Alaska."

"Did Coral send you up here?"

"No." Too fast. "I came by myself."

"At midnight. In the rain."

"I couldn't sleep."

I went to the stove.

Beck had left bread and butter and a block of cheese in the cupboard. Of course he had.

I lit the burner and got out my father's iron pan.

"What are you doing?" Tobin said.

"Making you a grilled cheese."

"I don't want a grilled cheese."

"Then don't eat it."

I buttered the bread the way he used to like it, all the way to the corners.

When he was eight, he made me cut the crusts off. When he was nine, he said crusts were for babies and made me put them back on.

He was watching me do it.

I didn't look up.

The smell filled the cabin. Butter, bread, cheese going soft.
