Chapter 7: Pale Gray

The pale gray wolf came straight at me.

I didn't run.

I took the bear spray out of my pocket, flicked the safety, and held it up.

He skidded to a stop three feet away, showing his teeth.

"Go on," I said. "Bite a parolee in broad daylight. Explain it to the council."

His lips curled back.

Then he turned and loped back up to the warden's hut.

I didn't put the spray down until he was out of sight.

My hands didn't start shaking until I was a mile down the road.

Beck was splitting wood behind the cabin when I got back.

He'd taken his flannel off. He was in a gray T-shirt with sawdust on it, and his arms were bare to the shoulder.

I stopped at the edge of the clearing for a second longer than I needed to.

He saw me doing it.

He didn't say anything, but the corner of his mouth went up.

Then he saw my face and put the axe down.

"What happened?"

I told him.

All of it, in the wrong order, and he didn't interrupt once.

Beck went very still.

He went inside without a word and came back with the little black notebook.

He sat on the chopping block and opened it to the Harvest Run page.

"Four and a half inches on the front left," he said. "A big male, heavy in the chest. Moving fast, but with a drag on the right hind." He looked up. "The Beta tore a ligament in his right hind leg at a hunt six years ago. He's walked with a hitch ever since. Even on four legs."

"You knew it was him."

"I thought it was him." He shut the book. "Thinking it wasn't good enough for a council. And then you were in the caves, and if I'd made a noise about Ansel's Beta, Ansel would've sent someone up there to make sure you didn't come out."
