Chapter 15: Wedding Gift

Nobody answered Beckett.

The music from the hall kept playing behind him, some fiddle song for the committee.

Lorne's arm was over my shoulder.

His weight was leaning harder on me every second.

"Get him inside," Beckett said to the second son. "He's bleeding on the grass."

"He's bleeding because Dad locked him in a hole," the second son said.

"Dad locked him in because he slept under a Scanlon roof in a Scanlon hoodie and came home talking poison."

"Mine," Lorne said weakly. "The hoodie's mine now. Gran said."

The bigger twin snorted.

Beckett looked at him with real disgust.

"Put some clothes on."

"In a minute."

Beckett turned to me.

"You. Off our land. You've got till I finish counting."

"Count," I said. "I'll talk while you do it."

I let the second son take Lorne's weight.

Then I walked up the path to Beckett until we were standing a foot apart.

Delaney took one small step back.

She was wearing my dress, and she smelled of my shampoo, and her eyes had gone very bright.

"You know who her father was," I said to Beckett.
