I looked down at Beckett on his knees.
The empty sheath shook a little in his hands.
A month ago I'd have given anything to see this.
I waited to feel something.
What I felt was tired, and cold, and sticky with wine and my own blood.
"Get up," I said.
"Not until you answer."
"Then you'll be down there a while, because I'm going to say this once."
I said it loud enough for the back rows, the way his father always had.
"No."
The hall was so quiet I heard the moths again.
"Not you," I said to Beckett. "Not as a husband. Not as a brother."
Beckett closed his eyes.
"Not the seat either," I said. "I don't want to be Luna of a pack that clapped."
On the benches, people looked at their hands.
The woman who'd taught me to bake bread was crying quietly into a napkin.
The twins were still standing by the doors.
The bigger one cleared his throat.
"What about us?" he said. "Not husbands. God, no. Just..."
