Chapter 14: The Sweetgrass

The Sweetgrass looked exactly as it had the morning I left, and that was the worst part.

The long white fence ran down the hill to the gate.

The kitchen chimney was smoking.

Past the house, the black ribs of the old barn still stood in the field where nobody had had the heart to haul them away.

The foreman was waiting on the porch with his hat in his hands.

"Told him not to tell you to stay home," he said. "Told him you'd come anyway."

"Where is he?"

"Cheyenne, with the lawyers. He won't be back before dark."

Maisie had already slid out of the truck and was running at the nearest horse.

Bea climbed down slowly, took the foreman's hand, and looked at the barn for a long time.

"Somebody's house burned," she said.

"A long time ago," I said.

"Was somebody inside?"

I did not answer her.

The foreman's wife, a big gray-haired woman with flour on her sleeves, came out and took both girls in with a sound that was half laugh and half weeping.

I let her.

I climbed the stairs alone.

My old room was at the end of the hall, the one with the window over the corral.

Someone had dusted it, and the bed was made.

My sewing machine still sat by the window with the green cloth cover over it.

I stood in the doorway and could not make my feet go in.
