Chapter 7: The Camera Crew

Conway was already at the door with his boots on when I came down the loft stairs.

"Stay inside," he said.

"That's a rescue."

"It's a request."

"It's my dock too, as of Saturday," I said. "Move."

We went out together in the gray light.

Reese's crew had set up in the middle of the yard between two hulls, one man with a camera on his shoulder, one with a boom pole, one holding a light the size of a dinner plate.

Reese stood in front of them in a pressed shirt, smoothing his hair.

He had a livestream running.

I could see the red dot on his phone and the viewer count ticking upward, past eleven thousand.

"There she is!" Reese said brightly. "Annalise, hi. We're live. Say hi to everyone."

"You're on private property."

"We're here to help." He spread his hands. "Tobias has been up all night. He has a little something for you. Roll the camera, boys."

From behind a tarped hull, Tobias stepped out.

He had cleaned up.

Fresh suit, shaved, a bouquet of white roses in one fist.

His cheek still had a faint mark where I had slapped him, and he turned that side toward the lens.

"Annalise," he said.

He went down on one knee in the gravel.

"I know I hurt you. I know I made the biggest mistake of my life. But I'm asking you in front of all these people. Will you come home?"

He opened a ring box.

It was a bigger diamond than the first one.

Reese whispered to the camera, "Pray for her. She's confused."

The count on his phone had passed fifteen thousand.

I looked at Tobias on his knee.

I looked at the roses, and the crew, and Reese with the little smile he thought was kind.
