Chapter 8: First Night

Conway had Tobias by the back of his jacket and put him in the road.

He did it politely.

Then he came back up the gravel, shut the green door, and leaned against it.

I stood in the middle of his big room with my bandaged hand and my heart going so hard I could hear it.

"You said you'd sleep on the couch," I said.

"I did."

"Those were your terms."

"They were."

"Break them."

He did not move.

"Annalise." His voice was rough. "If I touch you, I'm not going to stop at a kiss."

"I know."

"You've been married two days."

"I've been waiting nine years," I said. "I'm tired of being polite."

That did it.

He crossed the room in three strides and took my face in both hands.

His mouth came down on mine, hard, and I went up on my toes and pulled his jacket off his shoulders.

It hit the floor.

His shirt came next, and then his hands were under mine, pushing the old shirt I was wearing up and over my head.

The air was cool on my skin.

He stopped and looked at me, and his chest was heaving.

"God, you're beautiful," he said.

"Don't talk," I said. "Touch me."

He lifted me against him, my legs around his hips, and carried me up the three steps to the platform bed.

He laid me down and stood over me and pulled the sweatpants down my legs, slowly, one at a time.

I was shaking.

He knelt on the bed and put his hands on my knees and opened them.

"Look at me," he said.

I looked.

He kissed the inside of my thigh, and then higher, and I made a sound I had never made in my life.

"Conway."

"Mm."

"Please."

"Please what?"

"Your mouth," I said. "Put your mouth on me."
