Chapter 14: The Gate Opens

Marlis's POV

The Ninth came across the Yard in a slow, grim line, and not one of them wanted to.

I could see it.

Their feet moved and their faces strained, and the cords at their throats were pulled bright and tight.

Now that I knew how to look, I saw the threads running up from their necks into the dark sky.

"Run," Garreth said, close to my ear. "I'll hold the door."

"You won't," I said.

"Marlis."

"They're yours. I'm not leaving them."

I stepped out in front of him.

Sergeant Tolley was twenty feet away, and she was still crying.

"Marlis," she said, in a voice I had never heard from her. "Girl, run. I can't stop. I can't stop my own legs."

"I know, Sergeant," I said.

"I'm going to hurt you."

"No, you're not."

I raised my right hand with the palm out.

It lit up, silver and fierce, and the whole Yard turned white around me.

I looked at the cord at her neck.

It was old and fat, and I could read the oldest thing wound into it, which had been put there when she was seventeen.

I opened my mouth.

"Loose."

The cord parted.

Sergeant Tolley stopped in the middle of a stride.
