Chapter 15: Back on the Finger

Esteban didn't take the ring.

He looked at it on her palm.

"Joss," he said. "Don't."

"Then listen to her."

I came down the ladder.

My legs were shaking, so I took the steps slowly.

I didn't want it this way.

Not this.

In my first life she left him because of me, and never came back, and died in Portland without him.

I wasn't going to be the reason twice.

"Give me your hand," I said to her.

She turned around. "Mari, I'm making a point."

"I know. Give me your hand."

She held it out, frowning.

I took the ring off her other palm and slid it back onto her finger, over the knuckle, where it belonged.

"You're marrying him," I said. "He's wrong about me. He's not wrong about you."

"He threw you on a curb."

"He apologized. In front of a nurse." I squeezed her hand. "Make him do the rest of it. You can't do that from Portland."
