Chapter 14: Drake's Truck

Drake's POV

I sat in my truck in the driveway with the engine off and my phone in my hand.

It was past eleven, and the house was dark except for her window.

I had been out there for twenty minutes, and I had not moved.

The phone held two years of messages I had never sent.

Every June I wrote her something real, and every June I deleted it and typed: Happy birthday, Cal.

Every year she wrote back: thx.

I had a bad plan, and I had already run it.

I had sat in her room with my hand on her pulse, knowing she was faking, and I had been more scared than I'd ever been.

She never told me to stop.

Now I was out here, and she was up there, and I could not make my hand open the truck door.

The passenger door opened instead.

I nearly dropped the phone.

My father climbed in, grunted, and shut the door.

He was in his reading glasses and his robe, and he had two beers.

He handed me one.

"I'm not going to ask what's been going on in my house," he said.

"Dad."

"Callie's mother and I talked on the porch for an hour. She says Callie is a grown woman, and so are you." He opened his own bottle and looked out at the dark yard. "I told her I've watched you for five years."
