Chapter 25: The Garage After Three

Bridget crossed the lobby with her groceries, and the bread under her chin bobbed with every step.

"Imogen," she said. "Why is the man from the boardroom here?"

"He's leaving," I said.

"I'm not," Gerald said pleasantly. "Miss Finch. I hoped we'd meet."

Bridget set one bag on the table, next to my grandmother's lamp.

"I'm a nurse," she said. "Nobody hopes to meet me."

"A record left an emergency department in your hands."

His voice stayed calm and low.

"The run sheet from the paramedics. A nursing board is very interested in who shares those, and with whom."

I felt Bridget go stiff beside me.

"The paramedic gave it to me," she said. "Hospital counsel signed off on it."

"Counsel can be asked to remember it differently."

"You can't make a lawyer do that."

"I have made a great many people remember things differently," Gerald said. "That is how I built my firm."

He turned the gold watch on his wrist and looked at it.

"You work nights, I believe. The staff garage on Spruce is very dark after three."

Nobody in the lobby moved.

I had taken my phone out of my pocket a moment before, and the screen was glowing in my palm, recording.

I had done it the way I'd once plugged it into a wall screen, without thinking, because it was the only thing in my hands.

"Say that last part again," I said.

Gerald's eyes flicked down to the phone.

"I said the garage is dark."

"You said she works nights, and you said it's dark after three."

"Observations. I'm allowed those."

"Are you allowed within a mile of me?"

His smile slipped half an inch.

"I'm a witness against you," I said. "So is Bridget. So is every person in the boardroom who watched you hand Colby those keys."
